AVEN GRACE

"Therefore, my Beloved Brethren,
be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord"

1 Corinthians 15:58

                                   A Canadian View

Maybe you have an idea what Canadians are like…eh?  Just like America, Canada is a big place, with an amazing variety of people that make it a wonderful place to live or travel.  If there’s such a thing as a typical Canadian, it probably would not be me!  I was born in Nunavut, Canada’s newest Territory, which extends as far as the North Pole.  I grew up in tiny villages where the snow remained more than eight months of the year.

People learned how to cooperate with the seasons, and with each other, or they didn’t survive!  Independent and creative thinking was highly valued.  There were no TVs, few phones and lots of wide open spaces.  We lived close enough to nature to hear it whisper or rage, weep or sing.  Even though this environment seems harsh, there were also beautiful, tranquil times, fun and laughter, and strong, honest people who would give you the sealskin coat off their backs!

This is where I first found music and a reason to sing.  I met my Savior, Jesus Christ; and since then I’ve always heard His music inside of me, and all around.  There were many friends making unique music, and I began to learn to write songs from my heart. (Cont. below)

As a teen, I moved to the central Prairies farming country where I continued to sing in church choirs, learned more instruments and kept on writing.  I married and raised a family there, all the while learning through the joys and tears of life.  As our children launched, opportunities to sing increased, and for the last few years, I’ve been writing songs, producing CDs, and singing in concerts big and small in Canada’s western provinces and territories, along with joining some friends to make music in America as well.  I’ve had the blessing of support and prayers from many, the honor of awards, the encouragement of deep and enduring friendships, the great joy of seeing God use the songs I write and sing to make a difference where I am, and in places I may never go!

I might think differently than you, but each one of us has valuable strengths to share with each other, and just like co-writers, together we can bring forth something that is greater and more effective than any of us could do when working alone.  God calls us individually, and then joins us together to accomplish great things.  Let’s embrace each unique person, and work together to reach the world with the “message in the music” that He has written on each of our hearts.

So, I’m glad to get to “chat” with you in this column, and share topics that may look different from my ‘Country Canada’ perspective. I’d love to hear back from you too!

We are all part of one big family… let’s get to know each other!

In HIS Grace,

Aven Grace
